Righteousness and Obedience

Romans 2:1-5

Although we might be tempted to gloss over the first three chapter of Romans for their dark demeanor, we need to understand the indictment of the sin of all humanity in Romans 1-3 because without it, we cannot possibly begin to grasp the powerful message of the gospel. Without realizing our sinfulness and helplessness before Almighty God, we cannot appreciate the saving work of Jesus Christ on the cross, taking the punishment for our sins, enduring the wrath of His Father, and conquering sin and death for all eternity. We need these chapters to fully understand the weight of what has been done on our behalf. Romans 1-3 is the black backdrop of which the dazzling diamond of the gospel message is displayed, showcasing Christ’s redemptive work as the beautiful jewel that it is.
